Congressional bosses from Hell: Sheila Jackson Lee A lot of politicians give nicknames to their aides. George W. Bush famously referred to his attorney general, Alberto Gonzalez, as “Fredo.” Mitch Daniels, then head of the Office of Management and Budget, was known as “The Blade.” Barack Obama reportedly called Larry Summers, his chief economic advisor, “Dr. Kevorkian.” Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Texas also hands out nicknames to the people who work for her. The Houston Democrat addressed one of her employees as “you stupid motherfucker.” And not just once, but “constantly,” recalls the staffer, “like, all the time.”
Another Jackson Lee aide recounts the time her parents came to Washington to visit: “They were really excited to come to the congressional office. They’re small town people, so for them it was a huge deal. They were actually sitting in the main lobby waiting area….[Jackson Lee] came out screaming at me over a scheduling change. Called me a ’stupid idiot. Don’t be a moron, you foolish girl’ and actually did this in front of my parents, of all things.”
Yet another staffer remembers requesting a meeting early on in her tenure to ask how best to serve the congresswoman. Jackson Lee’s response: “What? What did you say to me? Who are you, the Congresswoman? You haven’t been elected. You don’t set up meetings with me! I tell you! You know what? You are the most unprofessional person I have ever met in my life.” With that, Jackson Lee hung up the phone.

Do you think I would waste my time if I did not think it was important for you to know Satan? My job is to pull the cover off of Satan so that he will never deceive you and the people of the world again.”
In response, ADL National Director Abe Foxman said: “Anti-Semitism has suffused the Nation ofIslam’s message, and Farrakhan is the standard bearer and bigot in chief….Perhaps what’s more disturbing is that despite his anti-Semitic rants, he has not been made a pariah in his own community. What does it take for him to stop being a pied piper of hatred?” Low-flow toilets cause a stink in SFSan Francisco’s big push for low-flow toilets has turned into a multimillion-dollar plumbing stink.
Skimping on toilet water has resulted in more sludge backing up inside the sewer pipes, said Tyrone Jue, spokesman for the city Public Utilities Commission. That has created a rotten-egg stench near AT&T Park and elsewhere, especially during the dry summer months.
The city has already spent $100 million over the past five years to upgrade its sewer system and sewage plants, in part to combat the odor problem.
Now officials are stocking up on a $14 million, three-year supply of highly concentrated sodium hypochlorite – better known as bleach – to act as an odor eater and to disinfect the city’s treated water before it’s dumped into the bay. It will also be used to sanitize drinking water.
That translates into 8.5 million pounds of bleach either being poured down city drains or into the drinking water supply every year. Not everybody thinks it’s a good idea.

As for whether the supposedly environmentally friendly, low-flow toilets are worth the trouble? The Department of Education pays about 1,500 teachers for time they spend on union activities — and pays other teachers to replace them in the classroom.
It’s a sweetheart deal that costs taxpayers an extra $9 million a year to pay fill-ins for instructors who are sprung — at full pay — to carry out responsibilities for the United Federation of Teachers.
With Mayor Bloomberg calling for thousands of teacher layoffs to balance the 2012 budget, critics say it’s time to halt the extravagant benefit. “In these tight fiscal times, it defies common sense to pay two different people to do one job,” said Dick Dadey, executive director of Citizens Union, a government watchdog. “It’s a waste of money.”
That $9 million would cover the salaries of 198 new teachers at the current annual $45,530 starting pay. The DOE lets 40 experienced teachers collect top pay and fringe benefits, but work just one class period a day. Under a contract agreement since 2003, the DOE excuses these veterans to work for the UFT — currently 38 as district representatives and two as union vice presidents. The UFT pays them another salary, plus expenses. English teacher Tom Dromgoole, for instance, collects top teacher pay, $100,049 a year, from the DOE for his slot at Leadership and Public Service HS in downtown Manhattan. But he is relieved for most of the day to serve as a UFT high school rep. The UFT supplements his salary by $50,461, records show. Officers arrested three people on suspicion of rioting, pedestrian interference and obstruction.
The melee began about 9 p.m., as an officer was taking a prisoner to the West Precinct office at Eighth Avenue and Virginia Street. The officer noted a large group gathered nearby at Boren Avenue and Howell Street, the intersection where Seattle police Officer Ian Birk fatally shot John T. Williams, a First Nations woodcarver, on Aug. 30. The area was the scene of a September protest. The shooting was ruled unjustified, but prosecutors recently said they would not file criminal charges. Mayor Mike McGinn, meanwhile, declared Sunday John T. Williams Day. As the officer drove by the group, someone discharged a fire extinguisher at the police car, police said. Members of the group put up plastic fencing and caution tape in the intersection, painted an anti-police profanity on the street and on a nearby building and placed a couple dozen large staples in the street, possibly intended to flatten tires, police said.
As police approached, the group moved away, gathering later at East Pine Street and East Boylston Avenue. Some carried signs encouraging violence against police and someone threw a large firework at a police car that bounced off and detonated, police said. As the group moved to Broadway then north, individuals pushed trash cans and paper boxes into the street, police said. People threw several lit flares at patrol cars, sprayed fire extinguishers at passing cars and tried to break windows at a bank on Broadway, police said, as well as damaged several businesses and at least one parked car.

Defence analysts claim the agreement risks undermining Britain’s policy of refusing to confirm the exact size of its nuclear arsenal.
The fact that the Americans used British nuclear secrets as a bargaining chip also sheds new light on the so-called “special relationship”, which is shown often to be a one-sided affair by US diplomatic communications obtained by the WikiLeaks website. Details of the behind-the-scenes talks are contained in more than 1,400 US embassy cables published to date by the Telegraph, including almost 800 sent from the London Embassy, which are published online today. The documents also show that: • America spied on Foreign Office ministers by gathering gossip on their private lives and professional relationships. • Intelligence-sharing arrangements with the US became strained after the controversy over Binyam Mohamed, the former Guantánamo Bay detainee who sued the Government over his alleged torture. • David Miliband disowned the Duchess of York by saying she could not “be controlled” after she made an undercover TV documentary. • Tens of millions of pounds of overseas aid was stolen and spent on plasma televisions and luxury goods by corrupt regimes.
A series of classified messages sent to Washington by US negotiators show how information on Britain’s nuclear capability was crucial to securing Russia’s support for the “New START” deal. Although the treaty was not supposed to have any impact on Britain, the leaked cables show that Russia used the talks to demand more information about the UK’s Trident missiles, which are manufactured and maintained in the US. Washington lobbied London in 2009 for permission to supply Moscow with detailed data about the performance of UK missiles. The UK refused, but the US agreed to hand over the serial numbers of Trident missiles it transfers to Britain. Professor Malcolm Chalmers said: “This appears to be significant because while the UK has announced how many missiles it possesses, there has been no way for the Russians to verify this. Over time, the unique identifiers will provide them with another data point to gauge the size of the British arsenal.” Duncan Lennox, editor of Jane’s Strategic Weapons Systems, said: “They want to find out whether Britain has more missiles than we say we have, and having the unique identifiers might help them.” While the US and Russia have long permitted inspections of each other’s nuclear weapons, Britain has sought to maintain some secrecy to compensate for the relatively small size of its arsenal. William Hague, the Foreign Secretary, last year disclosed that “up to 160” warheads are operational at any one time, but did not confirm the number of missiles. SEN. Thousands Wrongly Claimed Electric Car Tax CreditThursday, February 03, 2011 Via CNSNews Washington (AP) – A government watchdog says thousands of U.S. taxpayers incorrectly claimed large tax credits for electric vehicles last year. A Treasury Department inspector general’s report says nearly 13,000 taxpayers, including prisoners and some IRS employees, wrongly claimed about $33 million in credits for plug-in electric and alternative vehicles during the first six months of 2010.
President Barack Obama has pushed for 1 million electric cars on the road by 2015 and the tax breaks are part of the strategy. The government has offered numerous incentives to drum up interest in the vehicles, including a $7,500 tax credit for plug-in electric vehicles and incentives for converting a car into a plug-in.
But the review found problems with thousands of taxpayers claiming the credits for cars that failed to qualify.
